Wednesday, March 16, 2005 stayed at hm yesterday and today to catch up on my soci readings, first time i open the coursepack since semester started, amazing. got increasingly pissed off aft reading articles on gender issues in Singapore, scribble exclaimation marks all over the pages. learned alotta things tt i've nv known, had to take a cold water shower to cool myself down. have always taught that gerz pretty much enjoy equal opportunities as guys, so it's a revelation to my ignorance that:1. Women are pretty much like pawns manipulated by the state to acheive pragmatic nationalistic objectives. Equality to women in areas of education and employment was granted because of the need of a stronger labour force following independence, not so much of a genuine interest in women's welfare. In the 1980s when fertility rate dropped, women were told to submit to their traditional roles of bearing children instead of competing w men for careers, initiated by a policy change as LEE regret over the equal opportunities that his government had granted women and praising the japanese for their greater wisdom in keeping their women in lowly capacities. (patriarchal society, keep the women low and out of competition. meritocracy, a founding block of Singapore society banished) 2. There's no legislation that women are entitled to equal pay in the private sector. (lip service of equality) 3. Medical benefits are extended to the spouse and children only of male employees. 4. LEE speculated the possibility of reintroducing polygamy as a way of increasing the 'superior' gene pool?!?!?!?!!! (modern society?) 5. There was also a suggestion that (better-educated) Singapore women be required to bear children as a form of national service. (barter trade? women as machines of child-bearing as a form of gratitude and exchange for citizenship? how do you force women to bear children as a form of service? absurdity!) ARRGGH, i dun even wanna continue reading animore.. getting on my nerves. i suspect the uni's policy that all students have to read a module of Singapore Studies to better understand our country has backfired. Perhaps its original intention was that so that the educated future generation can show greater appreciation, but seriously i dun feel anithing but disdain for the near-authoritarian we've been subjected to. and i don't think i'm the only one. it's definitely made me more critical of my surroundings.
